Research Vessel “Hakuho Maru” completed system retrofit work to prolong its life

“Hakuho Maru” is a large research vessel operated by the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC). The vessel conducts research and surveys of marine life, geophysics, chemistry, and earthquakes in the world’s oceans. In 2021, the vessel underwent a system retrofit of all related onboard equipment along with the renewal of its generator and main engine.

JRCS was engaged in this large-scale retrofit project for more than six months. We removed all the equipment and parts inside, leaving only the enclosure (outer frame), and replaced them with new systems, including the main switchboard, engine control console, engine and deck starter panels, and propulsion switchboard. The power management system and alarm monitoring and control system were also replaced with the latest models to improve user operability.

“Hakuho Maru” has been in operation for more than 30 years since 1989. With this retrofit work, the vessel will continue to operate safely even longer in the future. JRCS is proposing the system retrofit during the dock period as a measure to extend the service life of equipment associated with the ship’s extended age. For details, please click here.
