“What if the ship vanished?” – Continuing maritime education classes at local elementary schools!

JRCS conducts visiting classes in Shimonoseki, a city surrounded by sea on three sides, to teach children about the importance of shipping and maritime logistics. These classes target upper-grade elementary school students near the Toyoura Office.

During the class, the size of ships is introduced by comparing them to Shimonoseki’s landmark, the Kaikyo Yume Tower. Placing them alongside familiar buildings helps students intuitively grasp the sheer scale of ships.

Furthermore, using actual vegetables and fruits sold at supermarkets, the class explains in a quiz format which countries they come from. This helps students realize that the items appearing on their daily dinner tables are delivered from around the world via maritime transport. This approach has been very well received by teachers and students , leading to requests for classes from elementary schools outside the Toyoura area.

JRCS will continue to expand its activities, helping children understand the importance of maritime logistics while also providing opportunities for them to learn about the world of shipping as a potential career choice.
