Zero Marine Garbage Week: Community Beach Cleanup in Action

Starting this fiscal year, JRCS has adopted a new behavioral guideline, “Nurturing Our Future Responsibility,” and is strengthening its efforts to protect the environment for future generations in partnership with local communities. As part of these efforts, JRCS endorsed the “Zero Marine Garbage Week” initiative promoted by The Nippon Foundation and the Ministry of the Environment, and participated in a monthly beach cleanup organized by a local residents’ association at Ayaragi Beach in Shimonoseki City. By linking this nationwide campaign with local initiatives, we aim to contribute to marine environmental conservation from a broader perspective.

The cleanup took place under strong sunlight, making the work feel almost like a midsummer day. Although the beach looked clean at first glance, many small items—such as plastic fragments buried in the sand and pieces of discarded fishing gear—were still scattered along the shore. This reminded the participants that the issue of marine debris exists even in familiar places close to our daily lives.

The participating employees worked together with members of the local residents’ association in a friendly and cooperative atmosphere. Through this community-based activity—quite different from their usual work—many younger employees commented that working side by side with local residents helped them better understand the meaning behind the company’s new action guideline. The experience served as an opportunity for them to connect the guideline with their own actions.

JRCS will continue to develop initiatives that enable people of all roles and generations to take part in environmental conservation, staying true to our identity as a company that has long grown alongside the sea.
