As part of its community engagement activities, JRCS provided technical support for a maritime outreach class for members of the Sea Cadets, held aboard the training vessel Oshima Maru by the National Institute of Technology, “Oshima College” in Yamaguchi Prefecture.

On the same day, JRCS also hosted an onboard tour for employees’ children, giving local youngsters an enriching opportunity to experience the maritime world firsthand.

Hands-on Workshop on Electromagnetic Propulsion for Sea Cadets
Each year, the National Institute of Technology, Oshima College conducts outreach classes aboard its training vessel, Oshima Maru, for members of the Sea Cadets.

This year, inspired by Chief Engineer Yamaguchi’s desire to let children experience the excitement of how ships move, a hands-on workshop was held in which participants built electromagnetic propulsion boats powered by the force of electromagnetism.

Several JRCS engineers joined the event as part of the company’s technical support efforts. They designed and assembled an in-house educational kit using readily available materials, including Styrofoam, aluminum plates, alligator clips, and batteries, enabling participants to explore the principles of electromagnetic propulsion through hands-on learning.

The kit, developed through extensive testing and refinement, proved highly popular with the children. As their handmade boats successfully moved across the water, delighted cheers filled the room, creating a lively and engaging atmosphere throughout the session.

A Special Experience for JRCS Employees’ Children
In the afternoon, JRCS hosted an onboard tour of Oshima Maru for the children of JRCS employees, ranging from elementary to junior high school age. Participants explored the vessel from bow to stern, including the engine control room equipped with numerous JRCS products, the engine room, the bridge, and even the Chief Engineer’s cabin. Through the tour, they learned about the technologies JRCS provides to support vessel operations and gained insight into the work of seafarers.

The tour was guided by Chief Engineer Yamaguchi, along with the vessel’s engineering and deck officers. Through direct interaction with the crew, the children enjoyed a firsthand look into the maritime world and developed a deeper appreciation for ships and the sea. The experience also introduced them to the possibility of pursuing maritime studies in the future, including at Oshima College.

JRCS’s collaboration with the National Institute of Technology, Oshima College represents an important initiative in supporting maritime education within the local community and provides a valuable opportunity for the next generation to gain a closer understanding of careers at sea.
